Our volunteers do more than build houses! Committee members are essential to Habitat’s growth.

We welcome your expertise, connections and passion on one of the committees that plans and maintains Habitat's programs.

Construction and Land Acquisition Committee

Activities:
The Construction Committee assists in the planning, designing and permitting of our home building and repair programs. The committee helps recruit and retain long-term volunteers for the work sites. They work to establish partners to donate materials to support the on-going new construction projects, rehabs and home repairs.

One of the other functions of this committee is Land Acquisition. The committee helps identify land and site improvement costs in order to make recommendations to the Board for land purchases.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Good interpersonal communication skills
  • Patience and ability to teach unskilled volunteers
  • Willingness to learn Habitat building techniques and safety standards
  • Basic understanding or interest in home construction
  • Looking for skilled tradesman or handy people willing to learn!

Development Committee

Activities:
The Development Committee acts to find sustainable funding for WCHFH through implementing a funding strategy, reviewing the donor support plan, recommending new partners, overseeing fundraising events, while growing the volunteer base and working to provide awareness through marketing efforts.

Family Services Committee

Activities:
The Family Services Committee assists in family recruitment, selection and education during the Habitat partnership process. The Committee helps with policy development, financial reviews, and one-on-one family support. Committee members also serve as mentors to Habitat Partner families.

Time Commitment:

  • Meet 1 to 2 times a month as needed with additional time commitment for homeowner application sessions.
  • Evening/weekend availability for conducting family interviews.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Compassionate, yet analytical
  • Organized with scheduling and paperwork
  • Able to ensure applicants’ confidentiality
  • Enjoy working with a variety of people
  • Basic understanding of credit reports
  • Spanish language skills a plus!

Finance Committee

Activities:
The Finance Committee leads the annual budgeting process, oversees audit functions, and reviews and updates financial policy and procedure for both the affiliate and the ReStore. The members of the Finance Committee are responsible for the financial well-being of the organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to ensure confidentiality
  • Finance, accounting or other relevant experience
  • CPA desirable

ReStore Committee

Activities:
The ReStore Committee serves as the mechanism by which Board members, Partner families and volunteers are involved in the affiliate’s retail outlet program. The ReStore Committee is charged with focusing the Retail outlet to serve optimally as a profit-making vehicle for the affiliate to maximize their efforts in funding affordable housing in the Will County area. This includes: determining and locating retailers/business owners who might become donors; assisting in targeting advertising and marketing efforts to increase donations and sales; and assisting in promoting the ReStore locally at community events.

Church & Faith Committee

Activities:
The Church & Faith Committee members are dedicated ambassadors from local churches and faith communities. Volunteers work on ways to strategically involve more faith communities in supporting Habitat’s mission of simple, decent, affordable housing for working families. They work with staff providing information on approaching church events, faith builds, outreach/partnership opportunities, and fundraising. The committee encourages churches and faith groups to put their faith into action and move beyond their four walls.

Neighborhood Revitalization Committee

Activities:
WCHFH is currently working on Neighborhood Revitalization in the Fairmont Community in Lockport, IL. WCHFH has partnered with the Will County Land Use Department, Will County Center for Community Concerns, and other community organizations and businesses. Neighborhood Revitalization (NR) is an approach to serve more families by responding to community goals with a variety of products, services and partnerships that enable residents to revive their neighborhoods and enhance their quality of life. The NR Committee connects residents, nonprofits, businesses and local government to discover what is needed most in a neighborhood and to help implement a shared vision of revitalization.
