A New Beginning in Aurora: Celebrating the First Green Freedom Home

A beautiful August weekend in Aurora marked a major milestone for Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley and their Green Freedom project: the house blessing of its very first home. Just one year after construction began, Humberto, Mireya and their family are celebrating a new chapter as first-time homeowners.
Born and raised in Durango, Mexico, Humberto and Mireya built their life together through hard work, sacrifice and perseverance. After immigrating to the United States, they moved to Aurora in 2006 to be closer to family and pursue new opportunities. Encouraged by a co-worker, they applied to Habitat for Humanity, and their lifelong dream of homeownership is now becoming a reality.
The project is also helping bring energy-efficient, smart homeownership to Aurora. Nicor Gas and Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley are collaborating to develop two Smart Neighborhoods™ in Chicagoland, including this Aurora community and a planned development in Carpentersville. The homes combine smart technologies, energy-efficient building materials, and a mix of natural gas, electricity and renewable energy sources—helping families enjoy more affordable living, lower energy costs and greater peace of mind.
Adding a meaningful touch to the celebration, retired Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Pastor Jeff Barrett officiated the house blessing. Jeff was part of Habitat’s leadership when Humberto and Mireya first applied, making his return to bless their new home especially personal. Seeing the family receive their keys brought their journey—and the lasting relationships Habitat creates—full circle.
For Humberto and Mireya, their new home represents more than a house. It is the culmination of years of faith, perseverance and hard work—and a new beginning for their family. “Miracles exist,” Mireya says.
Congratulations to Humberto, Mireya and their family, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley, Nicor Gas and all the partners who have helped bring this innovative community to life.
